Ai Matsumoto - Japan

The artist reveals...

...the ideas behind the work

“For me the title Lost in Lace conjured up an image of the disappearance of the long hours of hand crafting involved in lace making. By working with the silicone impression, the cloth, the making of which required much time, transforms into something vacuous and momentary. As the cloth is removed to reveal a new surface layer, the imprint of its memory suggests a loss of the time and labour involved in its making”.

Ai Matsumoto studied at Kyoto Seika University, Japan and Rhode Island School of Design, USA. She undertook a Research Fellowship at Tokyo Knit Fashion School in 2009. Exhibitions include Gallery ITEZA, Kyoto (2010).
